Accent Reduction Seminar

Ever been asked to repeat? It's pretty frustrating, isn't it? With a clearer accent, Americans and other native English speakers will understand you better on the phone and in person. In this workshop, participants will learn accent tips as well as secrets to speaking English in a more business-like, professional way.

Audience Profile



Who attends this training? If you are looking for a workshop that builds your spoken English skills in a fun and easy way, this is it. In this workshop we look at sounds, but do not focus only on sounds. We look at various elements of phonetics, language use, cultural contexts and interactions to provide a complete picture of clear speaking and context building. This session aims not only to improve the clarity of your speech, but also your listening comprehension with US Americans in business conversations.

Participants must have a working, conversational knowledge of English. The facilitator will not be teaching language structure, grammar or the basics of English.

Over 500 professionals—from companies such as Allianz, Arbitron, CCS Technologies, EY, and UST Global —have attended versions of this training.

Duration

  • Express Session: 8.5 hours or 1 working day
  • Express Plus Session: 16 hours or 2 working days
  • Home Run Session: 24 hours or 3 working days

* Session times based on classroom face-to-face delivery methods. Session and module length varies based on intensity of modules, number of activities, debriefs and number of participants.
**This session has been given in as little as 4 hours, or in as many as 30, in groups and individual coaching sessions in person or via Skype.

Number of Participants

For ideal outcomes 20-25 participants in a session is recommended.
For groups over 25, several options are available, including:

  • Breaking up the group into smaller groups
  • Extra per person payment (for groups over 25, note activities are abbreviated in many cases due to lack of time)

Best results are seen in smaller teams, in group work over a period of time

Mode of Delivery

  • Classroom: Face-to-face, instructor led
  • Online: For groups smaller than 5, classes can be delivered via online methods (Skype, Google Hangouts, WebEx, your company's virtual platform).
  • Blended: Training delivered in a classroom is mixed with online follow up via the Authentic Journeys Aspire Online classroom materials, quizzes, and supplementary materials. Online follow up could also include virtual role plays or demos.
  • Individual Corporate Coaching: Select individuals or groups smaller than 5 can meet live with Jennifer Kumar via phone or VOIP methods over a period of days or weeks.

Options/ Customizations



Syllabus customizations:
Role plays offer practice in mannerisms and context building.

Role plays include:
Presentations: Individuals or groups will be given business scenarios to present on to learn not only about accent and clear speaking skills for presentations, but also tips on body language, eye contact and mannerisms for engaging presentations.
Phone & Virtual Meetings: The class will be broken into groups, create an agenda and conversation based on a real-life business scenario, present the meeting over conference phones with the trainer sitting and listening in from another line to give feedback on many elements of the role play including accent, posture, facial expressions, listening skills, group discussion skills, accent, and meeting flow.
Face-to-face Meetings: Similar to virtual meetings, without the use of phones. Similar feedback criteria will be given as for virtual meetings minus the phone requirement.

Participant Teach-back: As a type of assessment of techniques and skills, the class is broken into groups to teach back a few concepts of accent reduction to their peers.

Communication Assessments: Individual and group presentation skills assessments given as requested. For assessments, audio or video recordings may be made to give participants real-life feedback for tuning and improvement.
